The Bamberg County Council adopted a resolution on March 10 to honor Mrs. Carrie Burgess Eaddy’s 100th birthday, according to a statement released in March. The resolution, sponsored by District 4 Councilman Spencer Donaldson, recognized Mrs. Eaddy’s centennial milestone and her lifelong commitment to faith, perseverance, and family.
The recognition highlights the importance of community members who have made lasting contributions through personal example and service over many decades.
Mrs. Eaddy was born on December 27, 1925, in rural Williamsburg County near Hemingway, South Carolina. She is the only surviving sibling among seventeen brothers and sisters and was raised in a Christian household where she learned values such as hard work and responsibility. As a child, she walked two miles daily to attend Hemingway public schools before continuing her education while living with her family in Florida. She later graduated from Denmark-Olar High School and Burgess Cosmetology Beauty School in Sumter.
A devoted member of Bethlehem A.M.E. Church, Mrs. Eaddy has been recognized for her strong Christian faith that continues to influence her character and service to others. In October 1948, she married Arthur Eaddy—a World War II veteran—and together they moved to Denmark in 1952 when Mr. Eaddy began working at the Savannah River Plant. The couple raised four daughters as well as cared for their grandnephew Samuel Edward Burgess and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Carrie Burgess Eaddy is known throughout the community for her integrity, wisdom, steadfast faith, and devotion to family—qualities that have left a positive legacy among those whose lives she has touched.
Councilman Donaldson said he joins the entire Bamberg County Council in extending their “sincere appreciation to the family of Mrs. Eaddy and join them in acknowledging a life distinguished by service, perseverance, and devotion.”
