Focusing on Black Health and Wellness
The theme for the 46th annual Black History Month is Black Health and Wellness, so we’re turning a spotlight on inspiring lung health leaders in the Black community. We will also be hosting an educational webinar exploring racism as a public health crisis. You can do your part to help us raise awareness by sharing our Black History Month Social Media graphics on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn.
As our 20th annual “State of Tobacco Control” report highlights how many states are failing to limit access and use of tobacco products, we redoubled our efforts to get the federal government to remove menthol cigarettes from the marketplace. As the odorless gas radon continues to be a leading cause of preventable lung cancer, the National Radon Action Plan provides a detailed, five-year blueprint to eliminate it in homes and businesses. Leaving a Legacy of Lung Health
Early on in her career as a nurse in a respiratory intensive care unit, Jane Reardon noticed that the same patients kept landing in the ICU over and over, due to a lack of resources, including basic lung health education. She partnered with the American Lung Association to write a book to help educate patients on their lung health. Since then, this partnership has grown deeper and flourished, and now Jane is creating a legacy gift as a continuation of her commitment to lung health. Representation Matters: Improving Cancer Clinical Trial Enrollment of Black Americans
Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by lung cancer, but underrepresented in lung cancer clinical trials, which are sometimes the best treatment options for patients. Our new initiative seeks to address this disparity in participation and treatment by increasing the enrollment of Black Americans in clinical trials. Our goal is empowerment, so that present and future lung cancer patients can reap the benefits of clinical trials and improve the lung cancer outcomes in the Black community.
