The GOP's Commitment to the Economy

With their Commitment to America plan, House Republicans unveiled a blueprint for leadership after the midterm elections return legislative control to the GOP. The plan lays forth concrete ideas and asks for a commitment from those who run under the Republican banner to work together to achieve its goals, divided into four categories. The first objective of the plan is “An Economy That’s Strong,” which looks to return America to work and mitigate the skyrocketing cost of living in the United States.

Most Americans have, by this point, felt the increasing pressure of our present economic circumstances. As of June 2022, inflation is up under the current administration by 550%. Perhaps of even more pressing concern, food prices are reported to be up 13.5% over the last calendar year, marking the most significant increase since the Carter era. If Americans cannot feed themselves or their children, no stimulus bill or infrastructure measure will greatly relieve them. Citizens are likewise struggling simply to drive to work and keep lights on in their homes as unprecedented price increases blanket the United States.

Since our current President was elected, gas prices have gone up 60%, with electricity costs seeing a 20% rise. Additionally, with American manufacturing declining, our national overreliance on imports and faulty supply chains have put people at financial and personal risk. Almost 80% of small business owners report no improvement or a worsening of Covid supply chain issues. Few with young children will forget the baby formula crisis of 2022 when the crucial product was out of stock in over 70% of the country. Those that needed the life-sustaining merchandise had no options but to pay black-market prices, or turn to potentially unsafe alternative measures of feeding their babies.

In the face of such dire circumstances, House Republicans have restored optimism this week to the future of our nation. Republican legislators look towards pragmatic solutions and teamwork centered around the Commitment to America plan to achieve a brighter future. Of primary importance is getting Americans back to work at good-paying jobs and preserving their take-home pay through decreased taxation and regulation. Not far behind is addressing the out-of-control federal spending exacerbating the rising costs of goods and services and having daily consequences on our national debt and autonomy. Under current inflation, Americans have lost the equivalent of one month’s pay per year, and Republicans intend to restore that wage integrity.

Another key concern is the growing cost of energy in the United States. House Republicans look to regain control over the national supply through an increase in American production. This reclamation will help out-of-control fuel prices and prevent economy-stunting situations such as rolling blackouts. Alongside energy production, the Commitment looks to move all supply chains away from Chinese control through loyalty to domestic manufacturing. Making sure that Americans have uninterrupted access to crucial goods- such as baby formula- is a critical factor in both economic and personal safety.

House Republicans are looking to work together to forge a brighter, more prosperous future for all American families. As we head into the midterm elections, one party has a solid plan to make things better for their constituents.

Have Representatives or candidates in your state began to discuss the Commitment to America plan? How do you feel about its economic components?
