Women have played a crucial role in the Republican Party since its founding in 1856, when three women gathered alongside 50 men in a Wisconsin schoolhouse to lay the groundwork for a Grand New Party. Since that fateful day, Republican women have been at the forefront of most major party decisions and stood as pioneers for women of all political persuasions. From Jeanette Rankin, the first federally elected female official in 1916, sent to Congress from Montana before women even had the right to vote for her, to Margaret Chase Smith in 1964, the first woman to have her name placed for Presidential nomination at a major party convention. They led the way on such crucial issues as suffrage and emancipation, both publicly and behind the scenes. This year is no different, with women of all backgrounds and ideologies running together under a bright red banner. Here are just a few of the standout female candidates put forth by the GOP in 2022.
Monica De La Cruz, Running for Congress in Texas
Raised by a single mother in a Texas border town, Monica De La Cruz has a lifetime of experience with the struggles she wishes to correct for her constituents. Monica worked to put herself through school at the University of Texas, San Antonio, before becoming a small business owner in her home region of the Rio Grande Valley. Now, Monica looks to provide security and economic stability to her constituents, including her two children. As the sister and granddaughter of veterans, Monica also cares deeply about ensuring our service men and women are protected overseas and taken care of once they return home.
Esther Joy King, Running for Congress in Illinois
As an Army JAG Officer and third generation of a military family, it is no surprise that Esther Joy King’s campaign slogan reads “America is Worth the Fight.” A graduate of Northwestern School of Law with both a JD and Masters of Law in Taxation, King boasts a financial mind that may even be shrewd enough to help address our national deficit. Ms. King also spent time after college as an aide worker in Afghanistan and assisted people in escaping during Kabul’s fall last year. After a career in the private and public sectors, Esther currently works as a real estate attorney and looks to bring economic stability to the people of central Illinois.
Angela Underwood Jacobs, Running for Lieutenant Governor in California
A former bank teller who worked her way up to regional manager, Angela Underwood Jacobs is the epitome of a public servant in California. Although she is a former City Councilwoman and Deputy Mayor, it is her volunteer credentials that genuinely impress. Currently, Ms. Jacobs serves as a Board Member for the Antelope Valley Transit Authority, Board of Trade, and Children’s Center, Vice Chair of a committee at the Antelope Valley Hospital, and Criminal Justice Commissioner, in addition to being a working mother. In 2020, Angela’s brother was tragically murdered in a drive-by shooting while working as a federal law enforcement officer, inspiring her to run for higher office to prevent such future violence in her community.
