WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who is set to serve as the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, announced today his intention to appoint Lila Nieves-Lee as the Committee’s Republican staff director in the 118th Congress.
“Lila Nieves-Lee’s career has been defined by her passion to expand economic opportunity for all Americans," said Senator Scott. "She will be instrumental in shaping a committee agenda that makes the right tools and opportunities available for Americans to achieve financial security, provide for their families, gain an education, start a business, buy a house, and engage in the modern economy – without unnecessary red tape and regulations. Having been such an important part of our achievements in the Banking Committee last Congress, I cannot imagine taking on the role of ranking member of the Committee without her by my side.”
Nieves-Lee, who is currently the senior director for U.S. Government Engagement at Visa, previously worked on the senator’s policy staff and served as his staff director of the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protections under Scott’s leadership.
“I want to thank Senator Scott for the opportunity to expand on the work we did together to protect American consumers and put hardworking families first," said Nieves-Lee. "The Senate Banking Committee is uniquely positioned to pursue an Opportunity Agenda centered around a fundamental belief that every American has the right to succeed. I look forward to carrying out that vision."
In addition to her roles at Visa and in the Senate, Nieves-Lee served as vice president of Autos Drive America, a trade association representing the U.S. operations of international automakers. She also served as a political appointee in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative as director of Congressional Relations and helped usher Members of Congress and staff through the NAFTA/USMCA and KORUS renegotiation processes.
A native of California, Lila started her career with the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and later joined the House Ways and Means Committee. She earned her undergraduate degree from Harvard University.
