Three Questions for 2024 Hopefuls After South Carolina Republicans Propose Making Abortion A Death Penalty-Eligible Offense

COLUMBIA, SC – After passing a near-total abortion ban just last week, South Carolina Republicans are continuing in their relentless pursuit against reproductive freedom – this time, proposing legislation that could make abortion a criminal offense eligible for the death penalty.

“South Carolina Republicans are showing again and again that criminalizing abortion is a key tenet of the MAGA agenda,” said South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Trav Robertson, Jr. “As the bills moving through the statehouse become increasingly draconian, 2024 hopefuls streaming into the state must now answer if they support allowing the death penalty for women who receive abortion care.”

As 2024 hopefuls flock to South Carolina, they should be asked three simple questions:

Do you support allowing the death penalty for those who receive an abortion?

Do you agree with Republican state legislators who believe abortion should be illegal — even in cases of rape or incest — despite a vast majority of South Carolinians opposing such bans?

Do you support a federal abortion ban?
