University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie issued the following announcement on March 8.
Coach Matthew Bennett, first-year interim head coach for the USC Salkehatchie men’s basketball program, has been named Region 10 Coach of the Year. Bennett credits the determination of the players for their success this season.
“Although we had an atypical start to our season, I am glad that the team and I were able to work together to accomplish the goals that we set out to achieve before the season began,” Bennett said. “Together, we have endured many adverse moments. However, we didn’t let those things deter us. I’m thankful to the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie for the opportunity to demonstrate my understanding and love for the game of basketball and for seeing my potential.”
Bennett began his college career as a player for USC Salkehatchie, ultimately serving as an assistant coach before being named interim head coach this season.
“I would be remiss if I did not extend my sincere gratitude toward Glen Mayo, who believed in me and took me under his wing. He has taught me a lot and continues to serve as a great mentor to me,” Bennett said.
Additionally, three men’s basketball players and two women’s basketball team members were recognized for their success this season. For the men’s team, Kharye Cayne was named Region 10 Defensive Player of the Year, averaging 3.4 blocks per game and 8.2 rebounds per game. Guards DJ Sinkler and Lee Langstaff were named First Team All-Region 10. Sinkler averaged 17.3 points per game while Langstaff averaged 15.9 points per game this season. Amari Hunter was named First Team All-Region 10 and Jasmine Norman was named Second Team All-Region 10 for the women’s basketball team. Hunter averaged 20.7 points per game while Norman averaged 17.2 points per game.
